Bike Fitting with Retul & Nate Cornelius
What do Craig Alexander, Mirinda Carfrae, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, the entirety of Team Sky, Garmin, Radio Shack, and even more world class athletes than I can name in this run-on sentence have in common other than riding bikes really fast? They all use the Retul fit system.
Anyone who has talked to me at length knows I love to use my baking a cake analogy when talking about bike fitting, BUT just in case I have not cornered and bored you with it, here it is again:
Like cake recipes, there are dozens of fit systems to choose from and each one has its own way of getting to the end goal of the perfect bike fit. The systems range from the archaic plum bobs and goniometer, to lasers and 2D motion capture, all the way to the latest state of the art, 3D motion
capture. But simply deciding on the right fit system does not ensure that a rider will receive the best fit. Let us think about cakes again. In addition to simply deciding on a quality recipe, to actually have a delicious cake, you need a good cook to blend the ingredients and to follow the recipe in the manner it was designed. Bike fitting, too, requires a fitter who is meticulous, knowledgeable and practiced. Over the years, I have eaten a lot of dry cakes and I have seen a lot of poor bike fits, even though both started with the right recipe in place.
So, let us begin with how Retul sets itself apart from the other fit systems on the market. Its precision data collection is unparalleled. The next best fit system considers only a hand full of data points. Though these points are some of the most important ones (such as knee extension, handle bar reach, and if you are lucky, some knee tracking); they are all on a 2D plane, which can be lacking when considering how much is happening in the kinetic chain of pedaling a bicycle. The Retul system, however, captures 64 data points continuously on each side of the body. This wealth of information allows the fitter to track down rider issues that would be impossible with other fit systems. With Retul, I can fit a rider on his/her own bike, or I can fit a rider on a standard bike and then use the Retul database to find the ideal bike for each rider based on his/her dimensions. It is incredible.
Does your knee hurt? Are you aero enough? Why is your pedal stroke not smoother? Should you be this uncomfortable after an hour ride? All of these questions Retul can answer because of its array of 3D data points. In addition, I am a qualified bike fitter. I have been fitting riders for 15 years and have been riding and racing for 20. I spent a week in Boulder, Colorado this summer learning the Retul system from certified Masters, and I have already fit numerous athletes since returning. I love cycling and I know bikes.
Though my car is a disaster, my bikes and the bikes I work on are cared for with scrupulous detail. Why? Because I love what I do.
I hope you will consider how important a proper bike fit is, regardless of whether you are an elite athlete qualifying for Kona or just enjoying a club ride every week. A good fit will improve your performance and your comfort on the bike, a winning combo. Swim Bike Run offers a multitude of fit options, whether it is a brand new bike or the trusty steed you have ridden for many years. Please call or stop by and ask for more information. We would love to show you what we have been baking :)
